Best Practices - Twitter/X

Tips and strategies for maximizing engagement on Twitter/X when posting through ScoutSocial.

Posting Best Practices

Keep It Concise

With a 280-character limit, every word counts. Get to the point quickly and cut unnecessary filler. The constraint is a feature - it forces clarity.

Use Threads for Depth

When you have more to say, use threads rather than cramming everything into one tweet. A well-structured thread with a strong opening tweet can drive significant engagement. Number your tweets (1/, 2/, etc.) or use a hook in the first tweet to encourage readers to continue.

Post Timing

Twitter moves fast. Tweets have a shorter lifespan than content on other platforms, so timing matters:

  • Weekdays generally see higher engagement than weekends
  • Morning hours (8-10 AM) and lunch hours (12-1 PM) in your audience's timezone tend to perform well
  • News and trending-topic tweets perform best when published quickly

Hashtags

Use 1-2 targeted hashtags per tweet. Unlike LinkedIn or Instagram, Twitter hashtags work best when used sparingly. Place them naturally within the text or at the end.

Engage in Conversations

Twitter rewards conversation. Reply to comments on your tweets, quote-tweet relevant content, and participate in trending discussions. The algorithm favors accounts that engage actively.

Visual Content

Tweets with images or videos get significantly more engagement than text-only tweets. Even a simple image can increase visibility in the timeline.

Polls for Engagement

Polls are an underused tool for driving engagement. Ask genuine questions your audience cares about - the votes and quote-tweets can boost your visibility.
