Current limitations and restrictions when using Twitter/X through ScoutSocial, including API constraints and content restrictions.
Known Limitations
Twitter API Paid Access Required
Twitter's API v2 requires a paid developer subscription for write access. The Basic tier starts at $100/month. Without a paid plan, ScoutSocial cannot post tweets on your behalf. Read access (analytics, monitoring) may work on the free tier but with significantly reduced rate limits.
Content Limits
- Character limit: 280 characters per tweet (free tier). Premium subscribers can post up to 4,000 characters, but ScoutSocial defaults to the 280 limit
- Image file size: Maximum 5 MB
- Video file size: Maximum 512 MB
- Video duration: 0.5 seconds to 2 minutes 20 seconds
- GIF file size: Maximum 15 MB
- Media per tweet: Up to 4 images, or 1 video, or 1 GIF per tweet
Features Not Supported
- Native scheduling - Twitter does not support native scheduling via the API. ScoutSocial manages scheduling for you
- Spaces (live audio) - Not supported through the API
- Stories/Fleets - Discontinued by Twitter
Rate Limits
Twitter enforces strict API rate limits that vary by plan tier:
- Tweet creation: Limited number of tweets per 15-minute and 24-hour window
- Media uploads: Subject to separate rate limits
- ScoutSocial automatically manages platform rate limits to keep your posting reliable
Analytics
- Tweet metrics (impressions, likes, retweets, replies) are available through the API
- Some metrics may have a delay of up to a few hours before they appear
- Historical data availability depends on your Twitter API access tier
